June 3, 1985: Athletics (17-32) at Yankees (27-20)

Don Mattingly blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI as the New York Yankees beat the Oakland Athletics by a score of 6 to 4.

New York tallied 4 runs in the 5th inning when they had 3 base hits. The big moment was provided by Mike Pagliarulo who made the crowd come alive when he rifled a three-run blast. Oakland threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Ed Whitson(5-4) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. Whitson was helped out by Dave Righetti who recorded his 9th save. The loss was charged to Don Sutton(0-9). He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 7 innings of work.

'We won because we did the little things right.' New York's manager said after the game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get in close games we don't make mistakes.'
