The Kansas City Royals plated 5 runs in the 5th inning and defeated the Seattle Mariners by a score of 5 to 1 at The Kingdome. 

Kansas City came up with all the runs they needed in the 5th inning scoring 5 runners on 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Lonnie Smith who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he ripped a base-hit plating two runs. Kansas City had 7 hits for the afternoon while Seattle had 4. 

The winning pitcher was Mark Gubicza(7-4) who allowed 1 run in 8 innings. Jim Beattie(3-5) ended up with the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 5 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.
