The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. San Diego won the hard fought contest in the 11th inning. Miguel Dilone stroked a base-hit. Al Bumbry stepped up next and he doubled. Tim Flannery then reached on an error. Tony Gwynn followed and he drew a walk to load the bases. One out later, Graig Nettles followed, but he was set down on strikes. San Diego had 13 hits overall, while Los Angeles had 10.
The victory went to Tim Stoddard(1-1) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Stoddard got relief help from Goose Gossage who gained credit for his 15th save. Orel Hershiser(7-6) was hit with the loss in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 2 innings of work.
