The New York Yankees edged the Detroit Tigers at TIGER STADIUM by the score of 4 to 3. 

New York had the game winning rally in the top of the 8th inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 4 base hits. After an out was recorded, Bobby Meacham jump-started the rally as he drew a walk. One out later, Ken Griffey stepped up to the plate and he tripled. Don Mattingly then ripped a base-knock. Dave Winfield followed and he laced a single. Don Baylor came up to bat and ripped a base-hit. New York had 8 hits for the night. 

The win was credited to Ron Guidry(10-4) who went 8 innings allowing 3 runs. Dave Righetti was credited with his 13th save. Dan Petry(8-6) absorbed the loss. He gave up 8 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 2/3 innings.
