Catcher Lance Parrish hit a clutch 3 run homer in the 8th inning as the Detroit Tigers outscored the New York Yankees 5 to 3. 

Bill Scherrer(1-0) came on to close the door tight in relief. No one was able to reach base in his 1/3 of an inning. Willie Hernandez was great in relief and recorded his 16th save. 

The losing pitcher was Phil Niekro(5-5). He gave up 5 runs and 8 hits in 7 innings.
