47,540 fans were treated to a fine game at ROYALS STADIUM as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The California Angels won by the slimmest of margins, 7 to 6. 

Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, California prevailed in the 12th inning. Gary Pettis doubled. Rod Carew followed and he stroked a base-hit scoring the run. The Kansas City bats were silent in the bottom of the 12th. 

Stu Cliburn(3-0) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 2 innings. Pat Clements got the save, his 1st. The losing pitcher was Dan Quisenberry(0-5) in relief. He pitched 2 innings and surrendered 4 hits and no walks.
