In a game for the baseball purist, Rick Mahler(8-9) and Kevin Gross(2-11) squared off in a tense pitching duel, Atlanta Braves finally emerged victorious over Philadelphia Phillies, 3 to 1. 

Atlanta took the lead off Gross in the first inning plating an isolated run using 2 hits. Atlanta had only 5 hits for the afternoon. 

Bruce Sutter was credited with his 10th save. Atlanta now has a record of 28-69. With the loss, Philadelphia has a record of 3-7 lately, 40-57, worst in the division overall.
