August 16, 1985: Reds (63-53) at Astros (55-60)

Mario Soto didn't allow a hit until the 9th inning as the Cincinnati Reds outscored the Houston Astros 3 to 0.

Soto(17-9) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Houston offense. He didn't allow much, just 1 hit and 1 walk in 9 innings. The right-handed Soto had his no-hit bid broken up by Bill Doran who doubled with two outs in the 9th inning. Cincinnati had just 6 hits for the night.

Charlie Kerfeld(2-2) absorbed the loss. 'Soto gave us exactly what we needed tonight.' Pete Rose said. 'When he threw the fastball he threw it for strikes. They were really fooled by his change. Most of the time he had them chasing it.'
