30,064 fans watched an exciting game at Forbes Field. The Houston Astros topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3. 

Houston scored 3 runs in the 5th inning when they had 3 base hits. The biggest moment was provided by Bill Doran who silenced the stadium when he slapped a one-base hit scoring two baserunners. Pittsburgh threatened in the 9th but Houston was able to put down the rally. 

Nolan Ryan(12-13) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Dave Smith earned his 23rd save. Jose Deleon(8-13) ended up with the loss.
