49,730 fans watched an exciting game at YANKEE STADIUM. The New York Yankees topped the California Angels by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1. 

The score was tied at 1 after nine. Finally, New York prevailed in the 12th inning. After an out was recorded, Butch Wynegar reached on an error. Bobby Meacham next to the plate and he drew a walk. After another out, Billy Sample was hit by a pitch. Don Mattingly came up and he slapped a base-hit making New York the winners and sending the 49,730 fans home happy. New York had 11 hits for the night. 

The victory went to Brian Fisher(4-1) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Stu Cliburn(4-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 2 and 2/3 innings of work.
