At Shibe Park, the Philadelphia faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's duel. Rick Sutcliffe(18-8) finally bested his Philadelphia counterpart, Steve Carlton(14-9), by the score of 3 to 1. 

Sutcliffe pitched well for Chicago in their victory. He went 8 innings surrendering 6 hits and no walks. Chicago had 9 hits overall, while Philadelphia had 6. 

Sutcliffe got help from Lee Smith who was credited with his 37th save. Carlton was the losing pitcher. He allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.
