Howard Johnson had 2 base hits and 3 RBI and Dwight Gooden threw a complete game shutout as the strong New York Mets bested the St. Louis Cardinals 4 to 0 at BUSCH STADIUM to clinch the National League East. 

Gooden(21-7) was very good in the win. He surrendered only 7 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. New York banged out 8 hits on the night. 

Danny Cox(11-13) gave a brilliant performance was the loser. He gave up 3 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.
