San Diego scored the deciding run in the top of the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Bobby Brown drew a walk. Steve Garvey stepped into the batter's box and he hit a single. After another out, Kennedy then doubled scoring the run. San Diego out-hit Los Angeles for the game, 14 hits to 9.
The victory was credited to Tim Stoddard(4-4) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Goose Gossage got the save, his 32nd. Ken Howell(3-5) was the loser in relief. He gave up 2 hits and 1 walk in 1 inning.
