Center fielder Von Hayes hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI at CANDLESTICK PARK where the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants by the score of 8 to 2. 

Philadelphia took the lead for keeps in the 6th inning when they tallied 2 runs on 2 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Rick Schu who helped quiet the crowd when he doubled plating two runs. Philadelphia finished with 14 hits while San Francisco ended up with 7. 

The winning pitcher was John Denny(10-12) who allowed 2 runs in 7 innings. Jim Gott(10-9) ended up with the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 9 hits in 5 innings.

September 4, 1985: Indians (50-86) at Blue Jays (82-51)

Jimmy Key had a strong outing and Cliff Johnson had 2 base hits at EXHIBITION STADIUM as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Cleveland Indians 5 to 3. 

Toronto had 4 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 2nd inning with the help of 4 hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Toronto banged out 8 hits on the night. 

Key(18-8) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 3 runs. Tom Henke recorded his 30th save. Tom Waddell(7-7) suffered the loss. He allowed 5 runs and 7 hits in 6 innings.

September 3, 1985: Reds (70-63) at Cardinals (80-52)

Jack Clark hit a homerun and had 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 10 to 6 at BUSCH STADIUM. 

St. Louis scored 6 runs in the decisive bottom of the 6th inning with the help of 7 hits. The key at-bat was by Darrell Porter who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he doubled bringing in two baserunners. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all. 

Ricky Horton(7-2) allowed no runs in 3 innings, and picked up the victory. John Stuper(13-7) suffered the loss in relief. He pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing 5 hits and no walks.

September 3, 1985: Mariners (67-66) at Yankees (76-56)

Center fielder Rickey Henderson had 4 hits and 2 RBI at YANKEE STADIUM where the New York Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 10 to 5. 

The New York fans enjoyed the offense provided by Henderson. He lined a one-base hit in the 1st inning, doubled plating a run in the 2nd inning, blasted a solo shot in the 6th inning and slapped a base-hit in the 8th inning. New York finished with 12 hits while Seattle ended up with 5. 

Phil Niekro(12-9) got the win allowing 5 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. Rich Bordi earned the save, his 1st. Mark Langston(13-10) was the loser. He got hammered, allowing 7 hits and 4 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

September 3, 1985: Braves (41-91) at Pirates (60-72)

R.J. Reynolds had 2 base hits as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the lifeless Atlanta Braves by a score of 7 to 1 at Forbes Field. 

Pittsburgh started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first when they scored 2 runs on 3 hits. That early scoring held up. Pittsburgh totaled 10 hits on the night. 

The victory was credited to Don Robinson(6-2) who went 6 and 1/3 innings, allowing 1 run. Rick Camp(4-10) ended up with the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. 

With the win Pittsburgh now has a record of 60-72. With the loss Atlanta now has a record of 41-91, worst in the division.

September 3, 1985: A's (56-77) at Orioles (67-64)

Catcher Rick Dempsey had 2 base hits as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Oakland Athletics by the score of 3 to 1 at MEMORIAL STADIUM. 

Baltimore came up with 2 runs in the 2nd inning when they had 3 base hits. That was all Storm Davis(14-9) needed. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score. 

Don Aase preserved the game for Davis, recording his his 22nd save. Jose Rijo(14-7) took the loss. The Baltimore ballclub's record now stands at 67-64. Oakland has a record of 56-77 after the loss.

September 3, 1985: Mets (85-47) at Padres (71-62)

In a game for the baseball purist, Eric Show(15-12) and Ron Darling(14-12) squared off in a tense pitching duel, San Diego Padres finally emerged victorious over New York Mets, 3 to 1. 

New York surrendered all of the runs San Diego needed in the 3rd inning when they tallied 3 runs on 4 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Show and San Diego. That was all the run support Show required. The pitchers took over after the 3rd inning as neither team was able to score again. 

Show got relief help from Goose Gossage who gained credit for his 28th save. With this win, San Diego has a 71-62 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With the loss, the New York ballclub's record is 85-47.

September 3, 1985: White Sox (64-66) at Royals (75-56)

Steve Balboni cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Kansas City Royals topped the Chicago White Sox by a score of 10 to 5 at ROYALS STADIUM. 

Balboni had a good evening at the plate. He lofted a solo-blast in the 5th inning and popped a two-run bomb over the fence in the 7th inning. Kansas City had a total of 12 hits for the game. 

Charlie Leibrandt(14-9) was the winner allowing 5 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Leibrandt got help from Mike Jones who earned his 3rd save. Britt Burns(10-15) was given the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 5 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings.

September 3, 1985: Expos (63-69) at Dodgers (79-54)

Doug Frobel blasted 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Dan Schatzeder tossed a complete game shutout at DODGER STADIUM where the Montreal Expos beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8 to 0. 

Frobel really lit it up for Montreal. The Los Angeles fans let him have it for what he did to their boys. He blasted a two-run home run in the 2nd inning, laced a base-hit in the 4th inning and lost the ball over the fence for three runs in the 6th inning. Montreal totaled 13 hits on the night. 

It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Schatzeder(9-5). Bob Welch(13-8) was given the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 7 runs in 5 innings.
