September 16, 1985: Cubs (72-72) at Expos (68-75)

Left fielder Tim Raines had 2 base hits as the Montreal Expos defeated the Chicago Cubs by the score of 5 to 3 at OLYMPIC STADIUM. 

Montreal had the game winning rally in the 8th inning with 2 runs on 4 base hits. Terry Francona kicked off the action when he doubled. After an out was recorded, Jim Wohlford stepped up to the plate and he lined a single. Sal Butera then stroked a base-hit plating a run. Mitch Webster followed next and he delivered a single scoring the final run of the inning. Montreal had 13 hits for the game and Chicago had 9. 

Bryn Smith(10-15) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 3 runs. Smith was helped out by Jeff Reardon who recorded his 24th save. Dick Ruthven(1-4) suffered the loss in relief. 

The Montreal ballclub's record now stands at 68-75. With this loss, Chicago has a 4-6 record of late, 72-72 overall.

September 16, 1985: Red Sox (86-58) at Brewers (65-78)

At COUNTY STADIUM the Milwaukee Brewers registered 6 runs in the 2nd inning and easily handled the Boston Red Sox by the score of 7 to 3. 

Ted Higuera(13-14) gave Milwaukee a solid outing. He surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings. Milwaukee managed 10 hits in their victory. 

Bruce Hurst(13-10) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 8 hits and 1 walk.

September 16, 1985: Cardinals (87-56) at Pirates (65-78)

Jack Clark jacked one out of the ballpark and had 3 RBI and Joaquin Andujar was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the St. Louis Cardinals outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates 10 to 1. 

Clark was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He clubbed a solo home run in the 3rd inning and doubled scoring a run in the 5th inning. St. Louis had a total of 17 hits for the game. 

The win was credited to Andujar(15-13) who went the whole way allowing 1 run. Jim Winn(1-9) was hit with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and 5 walks in 4 innings.

September 16, 1985: Orioles (71-72) at Tigers (86-57)

Barbaro Garbey hit a homerun at TIGER STADIUM as the Detroit Tigers beat the ice-cold Baltimore Orioles 9 to 5. 

Detroit came up with 5 runs in the 4th inning when they had 3 base hits. The big moment was provided by Kirk Gibson who brought a roar from the partisan TIGER STADIUM fans when he brought the hometown folks to their feet with a Grand Slammer. Detroit ended up with 12 hits for the game while Baltimore had 7. 

Dan Petry(14-11) picked up the victory, allowing 5 runs in 6 innings. Juan Berenguer recorded the save, his 2nd. Scott McGregor(12-8) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 3 homeruns in 4 innings of work.

September 15, 1985: Rangers (70-72) at Angels (61-82)

Ron Romanick blanked Texas in a very well-pitched complete game as the California Angels defeated the Texas Rangers by the score of 2 to 0 at ANAHEIM STADIUM. 

Romanick(10-17) was very good in the win. He didn't allow much, just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. California had only 4 hits for the game. 

Dave Rozema(3-11) ended up with the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 4 hits and 2 walks.

September 15, 1985: Padres (76-66) at Astros (67-75)

Terry Kennedy had 4 hits and 5 RBI as the San Diego Padres outscored the Houston Astros 6 to 4. 

Kennedy provided the offensive punch. He slapped a base-hit in the 2nd inning, rifled a three-run blast in the 3rd inning, ripped a single plating a run in the 7th inning and lashed a one-base hit resulting in a run in the 9th inning. Overall San Diego out-hit Houston 11 to 7. 

Lamarr Hoyt(14-15) allowed 2 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. Tim Stoddard earned his 1st save. Joe Niekro(10-16) was charged with the loss. He gave up 5 runs and 8 hits in 6 and 2/3 innings. 

San Diego now has a record of 76-66. With the loss, the Houston ballclub's record is 67-75.

September 15, 1985: Twins (62-82) at Indians (53-93)

Kent Hrbek touched them all and had 2 RBI as the Minnesota Twins bested the hopeless Cleveland Indians 9 to 6 at MUNICIPAL STADIUM. 

Minnesota tallied 7 runs in the top of the 2nd inning with the help of 7 hits. That was all the offense they were to need. Cleveland made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. 

The victory was credited to John Butcher(4-19) who went 8 and 2/3 innings, allowing 6 runs. Butcher got relief help from Frank Eufemia who gained credit for his 6th save. Ramon Romero(5-6) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings allowing 7 hits and 1 walk.

September 15, 1985: Giants (64-78) at Braves (42-100)

Jim Gott(11-10) and Steve Shields(3-4) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with Gott and the San Francisco Giants coming out on top of the struggling Atlanta Braves 2 to 1. 

San Francisco came up with 2 runs in the 5th inning when they had 4 base hits. After two were out Gott started the scoring when he smashed a solo-shot out of the park. Jose Uribe stepped up to the plate and he cracked a solo homerun. Scott Garrelts earned the save with a perfect ninth, his 6th save.

September 15, 1985: Royals (77-65) at A's (62-82) Game 2 (DH)

Catcher John Wathan had 2 base hits at OAKLAND COLISEUM as the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 6 to 5. 

Kansas City jumped out to the early lead in the first inning as they scored 2 runs on 3 base hits. Oakland had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. 

Bret Saberhagen(16-8) went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 5 runs for the victory. Dan Quisenberry earned the save, his 30th. Steve McCatty(5-8) was charged with the loss. Kansas City knocked him around a bit, as he gave up 6 runs in 5 innings

September 15, 1985: Royals (76-65) at A's (62-81) Game 1 (DH)

Steve Ontiveros had a strong outing at OAKLAND COLISEUM as the Kansas City Royals lost a heartbreaker to Oakland Athletics by the score of 3 to 2. 

Oakland scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Dave Collins lined a base-hit. Steve Henderson next to the plate and he doubled giving Oakland the victory and sending the 26,262 home-town fans home happy. Oakland finished with 9 hits in the victory. 

Ontiveros(3-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 innings and allowing no runs. Mike Jones(2-2) ended up with the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning allowing 2 hits and 1 walk.

September 15, 1985: Dodgers (86-57) at Reds (75-67)

Eddie Milner had 2 base hits at Crosley Field as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by the count of 2 to 1. 

John Stuper(14-8) gave a fine effort for Cincinnati. He surrendered 7 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. The pitchers took over after the 2nd inning as neither team was able to score again. 

John Franco got the save, his 27th. Bob Welch(14-9) suffered the loss. He pitched 8 innings allowing only 3 hits and 1 walk.

September 15, 1985: White Sox (69-73) at Mariners (70-73)

In a good match up it was the Chicago White Sox 5, the Seattle Mariners 2 at The Kingdome. 

Chicago had 4 runs cross the plate in the 3rd inning. That was all Britt Burns(11-16) needed. Bob James earned the save with a perfect ninth, his 30th save. 

Bill Swift(6-9) was given the loss. He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 4 walks.

September 15, 1985: Cardinals (86-56) at Cubs (72-71)

Shortstop Ozzie Smith hit 2 doubles as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Chicago Cubs by a score of 4 to 2 at WRIGLEY FIELD. 

St. Louis came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Smith got things going when he doubled. Cesar Cedeno stepped up to the plate and he tripled resulting in a run. Vince Coleman got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Willie McGee came up and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the final run of the inning. St. Louis banged out 8 hits on the afternoon. 

Ricky Horton(8-2) allowed 2 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Jeff Lahti preserved the game for Horton, recording his his 24th save. The loss was charged to Rick Sutcliffe(17-8). He allowed 4 runs and 8 hits in 9 innings.
